FACULTY OF PHILOSOPHY

History

The Faculty of Philosophy of The University of Tuebingen evolved from the late medieval Artists Faculty. In the so-called "great Faculty of Philosophy" of the nineteenth century most of the Natural Sciences and Humanities were represented. After the Faculty of Natural Sciences was founded, only the Humanities remained in the Faculty of Philosophy. Today`s Faculty of Philosophy contains the Department of Philosophy, and specializes in philosophical studies.

Teaching Staff and Students

The Faculty's teaching staff consists of seven professors and additional teaching personnel. More than 1.200 students are studying in the faculty.

Courses of Study

The Faculty of Philosophy offers three courses of study. Each course of study leads to a specific examination. The three examinations are: Courses leading to the Masters Examination or to the First Teachers Examination proceed through two stages. The first stage lasts four semesters and ends with an intermediate examination. The second stage normally lasts four semesters and ends with either the Masters examination or the First Teachers Examination.
Admission to the Doctoral Examination normally requires a Masters Degree or the successful completion of the First Teachers Examination in Philosophy.
Philosophy cannot be studied as the only major subject. Another major subject or two minor subjects are required.
Students preparing for the Masters Examination in Philosophy may chose other major or minor subjects from the list of subjects in which Masters Examinations must be taken. Almost all subjects in the Humanities are permitted. Students prepariny for the First Teachers Examination must select other major or minor subjects according to the requirements of German secondary schools.

Facilities

The Faculty's facililties are in the Alte Burse, on the banks of the Neckar River.
The Alte Burse was built in 1480, and is near the Tuebinger Stift. The Tuebinger Stift is an institute of the Lutheran Church, devoted to the education of young theologians from Baden-Wuerttemberg, the German state in which Tuebingen is located. Students of the Stift have included Georg Friedrich Wilhelm Hegel. Friedrich Hoelderlin and Friedrich Wilhelm Schelling. The Tuebinyer Stift and its heritage have contributed to the Philosophical Faculty's interest in German Idealism.
